ABOUT CARPE NOCTUM
|
|
|
Carpe Noctum was one of the UK's longest-running goth/industrial clubs, first opening its doors in 1999.
From the beginning, the focus was to provide the space and music for people within the scene to meet, drink, dance and generally have a good
time. The music policy has always been, therefore, non-elitist and broad-based, without descending into student disco territory.
By the same token, a desire to keep the scene fresh has seen many new bands introduced to the playlists and become dancefloor favourites.
Until 2005, Carpe was based at Bradford's legendary 1 in 12 Club, a venue owned and operated solely by its members
as an anarchist collective, and more accustomed to hardcore and crust punk gigs. During this time, frequent gigs were incorporated
into the club night, and many of the UK's finest goth/industrial acts graced the 1 in 12's stage. Other spin-off ventures included running
an Infest aftershow for a number of years, a daytime social event (Carpe Diem), and a couple of CD compilation releases.
in 2006 Carpe Noctum decamped up the road to the much larger New Beehive cellars for its monthly club nights, keeping Bradford's
goth torch burning for a further year.
The DIY ethic of Carpe's first home carried through to the end - it was always resolutely not-for-profit and run
by volunteers for the love of the music and the scene.
2008 will see a Wake back at Carpe's spiritual home - almost a literal home for some of us - the 1 in 12 Club. The time and
place are right to see the old bugger off in fine style.
